Kavita Narang, MD, FACOG, is a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist who is passionate about the care of high-risk and complex pregnancies.

This year, Dr Narang and her coauthors were honored with a Mayo Clinic Proceedings highly cited author award, which was developed to acknowledge articles for their meaningful contribution to the Journal's Impact Factor.

"As of February 2022, these highly cited manuscripts received enough citations to place them in the top 1% of the academic field of clinical medicine based on a highly cited threshold for the field and publication year, contributing to Mayo Clinic Proceedings' 2021 Impact Factor," said Karl A. Nath, MB, ChB, Editor-in-Chief of the journal.

Dr Narang and her colleagues were recognized for their article, “SARS-CoV-2 Infection and COVID-19 During Pregnancy,” published in Vol. 95, Issue 8 (August 2020) of Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

This multidisciplinary review examines the potential effects of COVID-19 infection in pregnancy. Because of physiological, metabolic, and vascular changes in both typical and high-risk pregnancies, pregnant patients may be at higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

“Pregnancy may modify or exacerbate the clinical presentation of COVID-19. If infected, pregnant patients may also experience increased risk of other pregnancy complications, including preeclampsia and preterm birth,” says Dr Narang.

Born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand, where she completed her medical school, Dr Narang was the first in her country to match into an obstetrics and gynecology residency in the United States, in more than 20 years. She is an American board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist, who completed her residency at Michigan State University, followed by her Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.

During her 3-year fellowship training at Mayo, she exceled academically, and achieved her academic rank of Assistant Professor within the first 18 months of her training.

Her research interests are focused on maternal complications in pregnancy, with a special interest in multifetal gestations and cancer in pregnancy. She has published more than 20 peer-reviewed articles in several top-tier, high impact journals.

"Pregnancy is such an important milestone in a woman’s life, and it is not always an easy one. I am passionate about providing compassionate and evidence-based care to help pregnant women and their families navigate the challenges and medical complexities they face on this journey and to provide them with the most meaningful and healthy outcome for both mother and child," says Dr Narang.

In addition to her clinical and academic interests and accomplishments; Dr Narang is passionate about resident education and has been honored with several teaching awards during her career.

On a personal level, Dr Narang enjoys practicing mindfulness and intentionally integrates this into the care she provides to all her patients.
