Route combines industrial metalwork and artistry to create imaginative items such as boxes and teapots with character— with teapots as a favorite motif. He has expanded his compositions to include nature scenes with birds in shrubbery. Route’s designs encompass use of brass, copper, and pewter.
Untitled, a work by Route, is a 30 x 72-inch patinated metal wall hanging created in 2010 (descriptive information). Route shared the process he uses, stating he begins with a colored pencil drawing created for commission approval Supplemental Figure (available online at http://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org). The varied metals are then selected to coordinate with the pre-chosen color or texture.
Shapes are cut using a bandsaw and careful sanding of the edges is undertaken. Colors are added using chemical patinas applied in layers by dabbing them on with sponges and setting them using a torch heated to 200 degrees. The final product is clearcoated with lacquer for sheen and protection, and mounted to a plywood base (personal correspondence, October 16, 2022).
Untitled presents a cheery, red-breasted bird perched on a single branch over a patchwork landscape. The silver patina-burst surrounding the bird implies bright sunshine; and the simplicity of the dark line of “earth” gives depth and perspective to the ensuing scene. The varied textures of each component hints at gritty sand, mackerel skies, tree bark, and grass-covered fields. The bird and golden leaves at the forefront elevate the piece to bring serenity to the viewer. One could imagine the brush of a cool breeze blowing to rattle the leaves and generate life.
Untitled is located near the elevators on the 6th floor of Mayo Clinic Hospital, Methodist Campus, Rochester, Minnesota.
