Camden Harbor II and Cape Cod Cottage Garden II by Daniel Anthony Daly

Recognizing the contribution art has had in the Mayo Clinic environment since the original Mayo Clinic Building was finished in 1914, Mayo Clinic Proceedings features some of the numerous works of art displayed throughout the buildings and grounds on Mayo Clinic campuses as interpreted by the author.
Daniel Anthony Daly was born on February 17, 1947, in Albany, New York, and received his BA from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in 1981. Prior to that he was a courtroom illustrator for Boston TV station WBZ from 1976-1978. Daly currently maintains a studio in Camden, Maine.

As an artist, Daly is comfortable in many different art mediums: Pen and ink, watercolors, or oils, to name a few, and has multiple showings throughout the United States. Much of his art, as in these two representations, features his East Coast home surroundings.

Of his work, Daly says:“I like to do pictures that someone can come back to, that make a connection, that say at this point in time someone gave a damn enough to record this image because these colors, this light, this scene are worth examining.”

Camden Harbor II and Cape Cod Cottage Garden II, two of Daly's watercolors, try to capture such a moment. In Camden Harbor II, the lap of the wave, the reflected light, and the bobbing of the sailboats, all things in motion, are arrested instances that appear as if recorded with a stop-motion camera. Cape Cod Cottage Garden II is inviting and welcoming. The warmth of the yellow house and gauzy curtains hanging in the window, and the flowering shrubs and shady trees of the garden all beckon for a closer look and offer a wondering of “Who lives here?”
Camden Harbor II and Cape Cod Cottage Garden II are located on the 14th floor of the Gonda Building, Mayo Clinic campus, Rochester, Minnesota.
