Diseases of the Veins: Pathology

Although one would expect the contents of all currently available textbooks of cardiovascular diseases to display a balanced emphasis on disorders of the heart and blood vessels, such texts inevitably include only perfunctory coverage of the latter. Likewise, the veins are seldom accorded attention equal to that received by the arteries in any treatise on peripheral vascular disease. Therefore, the publication of a book devoted entirely to diseases of the venous side of the circulation is particularly welcome. After all, it was the recognition of the existence and function of venous valves that led to the discovery of the unidirectional flow of the blood in the circulation by William Harvey in 1628.
