Antoine-Augustin Parmentier—;Champion of the Potato

      Antoine-Augustin Parmentier was born in Montdidier, France, on Aug. 17, 1737. He became an apprentice apothecary in Montdidier and later continued his apprenticeship in Paris. Serving as an apothecary with the French army during the Seven Years' War, he was wounded and captured five times by the Prussians. After returning to Paris, he became an apothecary at the Hôtel Royale des Invalides. He gained the rank of Inspector General in the Army Health Service.
