After the Kahler Corporation opened the Stanley Hospital for Mayo patients in downtown
Rochester, Minnesota, in 1917, a 12-room Mayo diabetic service was established. Headed
by Dr. David M. Berkman, the service featured a kitchen where Daisy Ellithorpe followed
Joslin's text on the management of diabetes through fasting and diet.
