Early New York Surgeons and Dr. William J. Mayo

      Dr. William J. Mayo regarded Boston, Philadelphia, and New York City as the chief centers of early scientific medicine in America. After graduating from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1883 at age 21, he visited New York City the following year. It was the first of several visits, each of which lasted 6 or 7 weeks. His younger brother, Dr. Charles H. Mayo, continued this custom after he graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in 1888.
