Shibasaburo Kitasato, Japanese bacteriologist, was born on Dec. 20, 1852, in the prefecture
of Kumamoto in west central Kyushu Island, Japan. He was the eldest son of the mayor
of the city. In 1872, he enrolled in the newly founded medical college in the city
of Kumamoto. He subsequently transferred to the University of Tokyo, from which he
received his medical degree in 1883.
