1 Diagnosis can be particularly difficult because of wide variability in clinical manifestation. Patients with FA often have irregular hyperpigmentation of the skin, short stature, aplastic or hypoplastic thumbs, and various anomalies of the radius; some patients have strabismus and mental retardation or other congenital defects. Patients with FA are predisposed to malignant neoplasms-hematologic malignant lesions are primarily myeloid, and solid tumors generally involve either the gynecologic or the gastrointestinal system.
